Ways to Engage
Organizations do not always need the same kind of support.
Sometimes the need is for experienced perspective before an important decision. Sometimes it requires embedded leadership during a period of growth or transition. In other situations, a defined challenge, program, partnership, or initiative requires focused expertise.
I work with organizations through several engagement models. The right approach depends on the challenge, the desired outcome, and the level of leadership required.
| ENGAGEMENT OPTION | EXPECTED OUTCOME | BEST SUITED FOR |
|---|---|---|
|
Strategic Advisory
STRATEGIC COUNSEL
|
Clarity on high-stakes decisions ahead of critical execution. | Board-level critical junctures, leadership transitions, and ongoing strategic executive questions. |
|
Fractional CMO
EMBEDDED LEADERSHIP
|
A fully functioning marketing organization operating at C-suite standard. | VC and PE-backed companies (pre-seed through Series B), with select later-stage engagements based on scope and fit. |
|
Interim CMO
TRANSITIONAL EXECUTIVE
|
Continuity of pipeline, brand trajectory, and team leadership through executive transition. | Organizations actively navigating a CMO departure or an ongoing executive search. |
|
Consulting
STRATEGIC ASSESSMENT
|
A validated, independent, and clear path forward for core challenges. | Discrete strategic decisions requiring specialized outside judgment prior to full commitment. |
|
Project-based Assignments
SCOPED DELIVERABLES
|
A high-impact, completed deliverable executed on time and aligned with strategy. | Well-defined initiatives with fixed parameters, clear deliverables, and strict timelines. |
How These Options Differ
- Advisory sits furthest from execution. I provide judgment and perspective; decision authority and action remain entirely with you.
- Fractional CMO and Interim CMO carry direct operational accountability. Both involve my embedded leadership of the marketing function, distinguished by duration and purpose: fractional is ongoing and portfolio-style, interim is time-bound and transition-focused.
- Consulting is diagnosis at the organizational level. I document findings and recommendations; implementation typically remains with your team.
- Project Work is the most contained. I lock scope, timeline, and deliverable before work begins.
Strategic Advisory
Experienced Perspective for Consequential Decisions
Advisory engagements provide senior perspective, independent judgment, and strategic guidance without requiring an embedded operational role.
Clients engage me when they are navigating important decisions, evaluating opportunities, developing partnerships, or working through complex organizational questions.
My role is to bring perspective informed by experience across business, nonprofit leadership, international engagement, economic development, and cross-sector collaboration.
I help leaders examine the broader context, identify opportunities and risks, and think more clearly before making significant commitments.
Advisory may include:
- Strategic growth and organizational priorities
- Partnership opportunities
- Market and stakeholder considerations
- Leadership and organizational transitions
- Mission, growth, and purpose
- Cross-sector and international opportunities
- Strategic challenges requiring an independent perspective
Best suited for: Leaders, boards, and organizations seeking experienced judgment without adding a full-time executive or consultant to the operating structure.
Executive Leadership
Embedded Leadership for Growth, Transition and Change
Some situations require more than advice.
Executive Leadership engagements place experienced leadership closer to the organization—working with senior teams to provide direction, build alignment, and maintain momentum through an important period.
These assignments may be fractional, interim, or structured around a specific organizational need.
Depending on the situation, the role may include executive responsibility for strategy, growth, marketing, partnerships, programs, or other organizational priorities.
Executive Leadership may include:
- Fractional executive assignments
- Interim leadership
- Strategic and organizational leadership
- Growth and market development
- Marketing leadership
- Partnership development
- Program leadership
- Leadership during organizational transition
Best suited for: Organizations that need senior leadership and accountability but do not require—or are not ready to hire—a permanent executive.
Strategic Consulting
Independent Expertise for Complex Challenges
Strategic Consulting is designed around a defined challenge, opportunity, or organizational priority.
The engagement begins with understanding the situation, the stakeholders involved, and the broader environment in which the organization operates. From there, the work focuses on developing a clearer path forward.
Consulting engagements are structured around the specific question or challenge at hand.
Strategic Consulting may include:
- Organizational and growth strategy
- Strategic positioning
- Partnership strategy
- Stakeholder engagement
- Market development
- International engagement
- Cross-sector collaboration
- Mission and growth alignment
The outcome is not simply a report.
The objective is greater clarity, stronger strategic alignment, and a practical foundation for action.
Best suited for: Organizations facing a defined challenge where independent expertise and a structured approach can reduce uncertainty and strengthen decision-making.
Programs & Strategic Initiatives
Leadership for Work That Requires Coordination and Momentum
Some opportunities do not fit neatly into a traditional executive role or consulting engagement.
They involve multiple stakeholders, evolving priorities, partnerships, and a shared objective that requires experienced leadership to move from concept to reality.
Programs and Strategic Initiatives engagements provide leadership for work that requires coordination, relationship-building, strategic thinking, and sustained momentum.
This is particularly relevant to initiatives operating across organizations, sectors, communities, or geographic boundaries.
Engagements may include:
- Program development and leadership
- Strategic partnerships
- International initiatives
- Cross-sector collaboration
- Economic development initiatives
- Community-focused programs
- Stakeholder engagement
- Strategic convenings
- New initiatives and special programs
Best suited for: Organizations launching or advancing high-priority work that requires experienced leadership without creating a permanent position.
Project-Based Assignments
Defined Scope. Clear Outcome.
Some needs are specific.
A Project-Based Assignment is appropriate when the objective, scope, timeline, and expected deliverable can be clearly defined from the beginning.
These engagements are focused and contained. The work is structured around completing a specific assignment without creating an ongoing advisory or leadership relationship.
Projects may include:
- Strategic assessments
- Research and analysis
- Partnership development
- Program design
- Marketing and communications strategy
- Stakeholder mapping
- Strategic plans
- Special initiatives
Each assignment begins with a clear understanding of:
- The objective
- Scope of work
- Deliverables
- Timeline
- Roles and responsibilities
Best suited for: Organizations with a well-defined need and a clear outcome.
Choosing the Right Engagement
The engagement model should follow the need—not the other way around.
A short conversation can help determine whether the situation calls for strategic advice, embedded leadership, focused consulting, program leadership, or a defined project.
In some cases, an organization may begin with a project or consulting engagement and develop an ongoing advisory or leadership relationship over time.
The goal is to establish the right structure for the work, with clear expectations, appropriate accountability, and a shared understanding of the desired outcome.
Start a Conversation
If you are navigating growth, transition, a strategic challenge, or an important initiative, we can begin with a conversation.
Together, we can determine whether there is a fit—and what type of engagement would create the greatest value.
